5 best ways to get to Hakuba

Hakuba is a beautiful Japanese city surrounded by spectacular alpine scenery and cedar forests. The many transportation options can make your head spin, however. To help you with the planning, here are our suggestions for the most affordable and efficient ways to get to there.

Direct Bus

If you’re travelling from Tokyo to Hakuba, the direct bus can be an easy way to get to your destination. Although it takes longer to travel, about 5-6 hours, and costs slightly more than taking the train, it can save you time as there are fewer connections with many fewer stops. You don’t have to worry about interchanging between trains and buses or struggling with your luggage.

You can book a Nagano Snow Shuttle bus with the option to get dropped off at your Hakuba accommodation.

Direct Train

If you’re looking for a faster way to travel to Hakuba but don’t want to go through connections and interchanging trains and buses. Catching a direct train to Hakuba can also be an alternative.

Be reminded that this train only takes the trip once a day, so be sure to plan your schedule to catch it. The direct train leaves from Shinjuku (Tokyo) Station to Hakuba at 08:00am and arrives at 11:41am via the JR Azusa Express #5.

Shinkansen

The fastest way to reach Hakuba from Tokyo is by taking the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo Station to Nagano Station.

You can take the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo or Ueno to Nagano Station. At Nagano Station, go to the east exit and find bus stop #26. The bus bound for Hakuba destinations leaves roughly every hour from 8:20 to 20:00, costing ¥2000 per adult and ¥1000 per child.

Chuo Taxi offers an easy option to get to Hakuba without the hassle of navigating platforms and trains or bus transfers. Bookings are available no matter how many people are at your party, and they will take you directly from the airport to your destination.

Car Rental

Renting a car is an excellent option for exploring the countryside around Hakuba, with many places to visit within easy reach.

If you’re coming to Hakuba and staying for at least a few days, I recommend renting a car or a 4×4/AWD vehicle. Many people arrive directly from Narita Airport, rent a car and drive straight to their lodging. This is by far the most convenient option and allows you the independence to explore the region in your own time frame. Though parking in Hakuba can be challenging due to high snow piles left on the streets, it’s well worth it for convenience and flexibility with transport during your stay.

No matter which transportation method you choose, you can be sure that Hakuba is all worth it. It is a spectacular place to visit and a unique spot in the Japanese Alps. Arm yourself with the knowledge to make your trip go as smoothly and efficiently as possible. With proper planning, you can set up a stress-free vacation that’s enjoyable from start to finish.
